THE DEWITT CLINTON WAY In 1897, DeWitt Clinton High School opened its doors for the first time, occupying the top floor of Public School 35 at 60 West 13th Street in Manhattan. Nine years later, the school moved to a newly constructed building on Tenth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets. In 1929, the noise of mid-town Manhattan was exchanged for a 21-acre campus on Mosholu Parkway in the North Bronx, where the school is presently located. All boys until 1983, DeWitt Clinton spent much of the 20th century as the largest high school in the world, with the enrollment peaking in the 1930s at 12,000 students. The school has never had an entrance exam. In fact, it wears as a badge of honor its commitment to educate all of America’s children. In the 1901 Clinton Review yearbook, the seniors wrote, “There is nothing upon which the reputation of a school depends more than the record of its students after graduation.” In that regard, DeWitt Clinton High School proudly states that its alumni have won the Nobel Prize, the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Technology, the National Medal of the Arts, the Pulitzer Prize, the Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy, the Kennedy Center Honors Award, gold, silver, and bronze at the Olympics, baseball World Series rings, and NBA and NCAA championships. Three days after the school’s first graduation, the class of 1900 met to establish the DeWitt Clinton Alumni Association. Today, it ranks among the largest organizations of its kind anywhere in the world. Though the Association is the guardian of the school’s history and traditions, it does not focus only on the past. Working hand-in-hand with school officials, it assists present-day students in their pursuit of academic excellence. Above all, it believes in the future of DeWitt Clinton High School. |
